Why You Should Stop Apologizing So Much in Japanese

Foreign learners often imitate native patterns and apologize excessively: 「すみません」 for everything. But in many situations, “thank you” is more appropriate.
For example:
Incorrect:すみません、手伝ってくれて。Better:ありがとうございます、助かりました。
Over-apologizing makes communication stiff. A balanced mix of gratitude and politeness feels more natural—and helps you build warmer relationships.
